Day 45: Rest day in Glasgow

Yesterday evening, we collected the boys from Queen Street and Glasgow Central stations and went for a fantastic, late night curry at Rishi’s on Bath Street. Then bed and a lie in this morning.

After a leisurely breakfast, we catch the number three bus to Pollok Country Park to visit the Burrell Collection. Somehow, we manage to have to cross a dual carriageway and a golf course and find ourselves visiting Pollok House. As we leave the house, a free electric bus stops and offers to ferry us to the Burrell Collection.

The Burrell Collection is an eclectic mix of artefacts and artworks amassed by William Burrell. Burrell inherited his family’s shipping business and earned himself a sizeable fortune, much of it from selling his ships on during World War One. He spent a great deal of this on art and miscellaneous objects. In this respect, it’s very similar to the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia, but on a much larger scale. Burrell bequeathed his art to the nation, one of the world’s most generous private donations.

We get the bus back then settle in for a rest before heading out to La Lanterna, allegedly Glasgow’s finest Italian restaurant, for dinner.
